1. Who we are

Red Letters is operated by Black Mile Studios LLC, an Alabama limited liability company. You can reach us at blackmilestudios@gmail.com.

2. Information we collect

We collect only what is necessary to operate the app:

• Account information: If you create an account, we collect your name and email address. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive basic profile information from those providers.
• Conversation data: The messages you send and receive within the app are stored in your account so they persist across sessions and devices.
• Usage data: We track how many messages you send each month to apply free-tier limits and manage subscription entitlements.
• Purchase information: If you subscribe to Red Letters Pro, payment is handled by Apple through the App Store. We never see your card number or payment details. Apple shares only the information needed to confirm your subscription, such as the product, a transaction ID and the renewal or expiration date.
• Beta feedback: If you test a pre-release version through TestFlight and send feedback in the app, we receive your answers along with your app version, iOS version, device model, and which test tasks you completed. Feedback is stored with your account and emailed to us so we can respond.
• Reported replies: If you report a reply, we receive that reply, the message it answered, the reason you chose, any note you add, and your app version, iOS version, and device model. Reports are stored with your account so we can review them and improve Red Letters. We get an email saying a report was made, but the email does not include the reply, your message, or your note.

3. How we use your information

• To provide and operate the app and its features
• To sync your conversations and preferences across devices
• To manage your subscription and message limits
• To respond to support requests
• To check that AI replies are working well, using automated totals that contain no message text
• To comply with legal obligations

We do not use your conversations to train AI models. Your messages are sent to Anthropic's API solely to generate a response and are governed by Anthropic's usage policies.

We don't read your conversations. To make sure Red Letters is working as it should, automated checks look at each AI reply as it is made and keep only daily totals, such as how often replies begin the same way, or whether a reply to someone in crisis included the 988 Lifeline. These totals contain no message text, are not linked to your account, and are deleted after 90 days. We see a specific reply only if you report it, or if you contact us for help and choose to share it.

4. Data storage and security

Your data is stored in Google Firebase (Firestore), a cloud database operated by Google. Firebase provides encryption at rest and in transit. We use Firebase Authentication for secure sign-in.

We take reasonable measures to protect your information, but no system is completely secure. Please use a strong, unique password if you sign in with email.

5. Third-party services

Red Letters uses the following third-party services, each governed by their own privacy policies:

• Anthropic — AI response generation
• Google Firebase — Authentication, database, and hosting
• Apple — Sign in with Apple and App Store in-app purchases
• Google — Google Sign-In

We do not sell your data to any third party, and we do not display advertising.

6. Data retention and deletion

Your data is retained as long as your account is active. You may delete your account at any time from the Account screen within the app. Deleting your account permanently removes your conversations, preferences, beta feedback, reported replies, and personal information from our systems. If you sent beta feedback, we also delete the copy that was emailed to us.

Apple keeps its own records of App Store purchases under its privacy policy. Deleting your Red Letters account does not cancel an App Store subscription; cancel it in your Apple ID settings.

7. Children's privacy

Red Letters complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and other applicable child-safety and privacy laws. The app is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at blackmilestudios@gmail.com and we will delete the account and its data promptly.

Teens aged 13 to 17 may use Red Letters with the consent of a parent or guardian, as our Terms of Service require. We collect the same limited information from teens as from adults, we do not sell it or use it for advertising, and a parent or guardian may ask us to review or delete a teen's account at any time.

Red Letters is an AI experience, and the app tells every user so. Replies are generated by AI and include safeguards for younger users: no sexual or romantic content, encouragement to talk with a parent, guardian, or other trusted adult about serious problems, and crisis resources when someone may be in danger.

8. Your rights

You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal information at any time. You can manage your information within the app or by contacting us directly. If you are located in the European Economic Area, you may also have rights under GDPR including data portability and the right to object to processing.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date above. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
